A top AEW star has been sidelined due to an injury he sustained while training.
On the January 28 episode of AEW Dynamite, commentator Excalibur revealed that former AEW World Champion Samoa Joe has not been cleared to compete due to a non-contact injury he sustained while training. The company didn’t share any further details, and it’s unclear when The Samoan Submission Machine will return to the ring.
Samoa Joe lost the AEW World Championship to MJF at Worlds End last month in a four-way match, which also featured Hangman Page and Swerve Strickland. After that, Joe and the Opps lost the World Trios Championship to Page and JetSpeed at Collision on January 17. The match also marked Powerhouse Hobbs’ final AEW appearance, as he is WWE-bound.
Samoa Joe’s last match took place on the January 21 episode of Dynamite, where he defeated “Speedball” Mike Bailey in a singles match. While it looked like he was on track to challenge MJF for the AEW World Championship, the untimely injury has unfortunately taken him out of the title picture.
As Tony Schiavone announced on this week’s Dynamite, Kenny Omega, Andrade El Idolo, Swerve Strickland, and Hangman Page are the four top contenders for the AEW World Championship. The top two will face off at Grand Slam Australia next month to earn a world title shot at Revolution.

WrestleZone will have more details on Samoa Joe’s status once they are available.
