Drew McIntyre Says Current Promos Are A Unfiltered Display Of His Scottish Personality

Drew McIntyre discusses his recent promos.

In recent years, Drew McIntyre has molded himself into one of WWE’s most beloved and cheery babyfaces. Over the last six months, however, McIntyre has adopted a more aggressive approach. Fueled by pure spite, the once sparkling “Scottish Warrior” is now a savage wildcard, intent on taking down anything and anyone that steps in his path. As such, McIntyre has directed several verbal (and physical) shots at the likes of CM Punk, Seth Rollins, and Jey Uso.

In an interview with Evan Mack, McIntyre was asked about his recent series of promos, specifically with regard to his ability to entertainingly troll his targets.

“I would suggest anybody that thinks it’s something that’s never happened before, and it just magically started happening, watch my work from independents in 2014 to 2017, specifically in places like ICW in Scotland, where I was just fully unleashed, fully myself, really a crowd disturbed. I’m from the UK, I’ve got that British personality, I’ve got that Scottish personality where we just tear each other apart,” McIntyre said.

“Like in my group chats, people would be shocked if they saw the things my friends and I say to each other back home. And they’re like, ‘You’re friends?’ I was like, ‘That’s just the way we talk to each other.’ But as smiley sword Drew, those limitations, how far you can go tearing people apart?”

Friendly (Or Not So Friendly) Inspiration

While some of McIntyre’s zingers naturally stem from his Scottish personality, others originate from the mind of one of his real-life friends. In this case, McIntyre will then put his own twist on his friend’s content, and promptly distribute it onto the internet, or sometimes, on television.

“There’s one of my buddies in the UK, he’s very good with his stuff. He’s always got some great thoughts and great ideas. We rip on each other, and if something’s hilarious we’re saying to each other, I’m like, ‘I’m going to spin that right into something on the internet’ because it’s fun right now,” McIntyre said. “There’s a blank canvas. Everything’s kind of hitting it and I’m just being very very Scottish with a very British personality and people seem to be enjoying it.”
