The WWE future of Spirit Squad members Ken Doane and Mike Mondo have been a hot topic as of late, as the team has been appearing regularly on Smackdown since they returned to WWE, and are backstage for Smackdown Live tonight in New Jersey.
According to PWInsider.com, there has been talk of giving Kenny and Mikey another run in the company following their current story line with The Miz, but as of this writing the two remained unsigned and are still accepting bookings through Bill Behrens via showbis@aol.com.
In related news, there has been a lot fan speculation over the past few weeks as to whether or not there is current backstage heat between Ken Doane and John Cena due to their storied past.
For those not familiar with the backstory, Ken Doane was previously engaged to Mickie James during their last run in WWE, and Doane publicly noted on social media that he discovered James was cheating on her with John Cena. Doane said he discovered James was searching online about rumors of her and Cena dating.
Doane was eventually released in 2008, and he went on to allege that the drama between himself, Cena and James eventually lead to Doane being moved to the Smackdown brand. He posted the following on Twitter back in 2008:
“He was messing with MJ so I got moved to Smackdown so they could further mess. I jobbed, got fired. When MJ got crazy because he wouldn’t date her, she then got fired. Weird biz huh? She got title, on TV show while with him. Serves her well though…She wanted to date him, he said no, she flipped out backstage which led to her demise…When they were together she got the title, TV roles. When he dumped her she became Piggy James, then fired.”
Since then, Mickie James has gone on to marry Nick Aldis, fka Magnus in TNA, and the two have a child together. Back in 2012, Doane posted the following about James’ relationship with Cena and now Aldis:
“She was googling Mickie James and John Cena dating. I asked why, she broke down crying. Then I heard more from others. She was checking to see if it was on the net yet. I feel bad for Magnus. Nice guy dating a …. well u know.”
PWInsider.com is reporting there is currently no backstage heat between Doane and Cena, mainly due to the fact that they are in “two different worlds” backstage in WWE. On an interesting and coincidental note, Mickie James will be making her return to WWE at NXT Takeover Toronto, where she will challenge Asuka for the NXT Women’s Title. As we noted, James’ match with Asuka is currently a one-off deal with WWE, but there is always the possibility she could return to the company full-time.
