3 WWE Returns That Could Decide CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam

The Undisputed WWE Championship clash between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes already has all the ingredients of a blockbuster main event.

However, with several major names reportedly nearing a return, the biggest twist might come from someone who isn’t officially in the match.

Nothing has been confirmed by WWE, but unresolved rivalries and recent reports have opened the door to plenty of speculation.

If history has taught WWE fans anything, it’s to expect an RKO or two out of nowhere when the stakes are highest.

Three WWE returns that could change the SummerSlam main event

Randy Orton

According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Randy Orton is expected to return “very soon,” with Dave Meltzer suggesting it could happen as early as next week. That timeline naturally fuels speculation about a SummerSlam appearance.

Orton has unfinished business with Cody Rhodes after their WrestleMania 42 rivalry ended abruptly due to his injury. A surprise return could see “The Viper” seemingly help Rhodes before striking with a trademark RKO, costing him the championship and reigniting their rivalry. Alternatively, Orton could target Punk to insert himself directly into the title picture.

Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens is also reportedly nearing an in-ring return following his lengthy recovery from neck surgery. His loyalty to Sami Zayn provides a believable motive if he chooses to target Punk, who ended Zayn’s brief 9-day WWE Championship reign.

A returning Owens could attack Punk during or after the match, potentially handing Cody the victory or simply ensuring Punk leaves SummerSlam without celebrating. It would also create a ready-made feud for the champion coming out of the event.

Drew McIntyre

While there are no reports linking Drew McIntyre to an imminent return, his unresolved issues with Punk make him another logical wild card. Their rivalry has dominated WWE television for more than two years, and McIntyre has repeatedly shown he’s willing to derail Punk whenever the opportunity arises.

A surprise appearance to cost CM Punk the title would immediately place McIntyre back in the championship conversation. It would also continue one of WWE’s most personal rivalries without missing a beat.

For now, these scenarios remain speculation. Still, with SummerSlam known for shocking moments and multiple top stars potentially on the verge of returning, Punk and Rhodes may need to keep their eyes on more than just each other once the opening bell rings.
