Road Dogg opens up about his WWE departure.
In March, Brian James stepped down from his position as co-lead writer of WWE SmackDown, a role he had just taken up in February.
According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, James personally chose to leave the position rather than being released by WWE. The report stated that he “openly expressed his unhappiness and tendered his resignation from the creative team.”
A veteran of the business, Road Dogg took on backstage roles in the company over a decade ago. He served as a match producer before working his way up the WWE creative ladder, eventually becoming associated with a major position behind the scenes on SmackDown.
Road Dogg addresses his WWE departure
During a virtual signing with Signed By Superstars, Road Dogg revealed why he left his position in WWE, noting he wasn’t able to keep up with the pace of work and that family time influenced his decision to step away.
“It was just moving too fast for me. We talked about my brothers and their grandkids and I didn’t get to spend a whole lot of time with mine, so I’m gonna do more of that now.”
James also commented on his WWE: Unreal appearance, which saw him attend a creative meeting led by Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque. He emphasized the production as a strategic tool for WWE rather than peeling back the curtain on kayfabe.
“As an old timer, I think we always feel that way,” James said. “The idea behind it, in my opinion, is it’s an on-ramp or an exit ramp into the actual episodic television show, and I don’t know if there’s a metric that can tell you whether that works or not.” [WrestlingNews.co]
