Road Dogg Resigned From WWE Creative After Expressing Unhappiness — Report

A longtime WWE backstage figure — Road Dogg — has stepped away from his creative role, marking another change within the company’s writing team as WrestleMania season approaches.

According to reports released on March 5, WWE Hall of Famer Brian “Road Dogg” James is no longer part of WWE’s creative staff. James had served as the co-lead writer for Friday Night SmackDown, a position he held during the company’s current creative restructuring.

While the initial reports confirmed his departure, additional details soon clarified how and why the situation unfolded.

Report Shares New Details On Road Dogg’s WWE Creative Exit

According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, James personally chose to leave the position rather than being released by WWE. The report states that he “openly expressed his unhappiness and tendered his resignation from the creative team.”

Sources indicated the decision happened in person, emphasizing that WWE did not remove him from the role. In fact, the report notes the opposite — James voluntarily walked away from the job.

James had been part of WWE’s creative operations for more than a decade. Since 2014, he has worked in several backstage roles, including producer and head writer during the SmackDown Live era. His latest run saw him return to a lead creative position on the blue brand.

The departure also comes during a broader reshuffle within WWE’s writing team. Alexandra Williams recently announced via LinkedIn that she has been promoted to Vice President and Lead Writer for Monday Night RAW, overseeing creative development for the flagship program.

Despite stepping away from creative duties, James may still appear at WWE-related events. Reports note he holds a separate WWE Legends deal. This means previously advertised appearances — including meet-and-greet sessions during WrestleMania week in Las Vegas — could still take place.

Outside the ring, James remains widely known for his career as Road Dogg, one-half of the New Age Outlaws and a member of the legendary D-Generation X faction alongside Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Billy Gunn, X-Pac, and Chyna.

For now, James’ departure represents another backstage shift as WWE continues preparing for WrestleMania 42. Nevertheless, recent developments prove that sometimes even the creative team can’t avoid a storyline twist.
