WWE’s Trick Williams Reacts To Criticism That He Needs Carmelo Hayes To Stay Relevant

WWE SmackDown star Trick Williams responds to fans’ criticism that he needed Carmelo Hayes to stay relevant.

During his recent appearance on the Battleground Podcast, Trick Williams responded to the online fan criticism that he needed reigning United States Champion Carmelo Hayes to stay relevant in NXT. He partnered with Hayes in the developmental brand from 2021 to 2024. They had a brief feud that culminated with Williams beating Hayes in a Steel Cage match in April 2024.

Trick Williams went on to become a 2-time NXT Champion after feuding with Carmelo Hayes and was called up to SmackDown in January 2026. However, some fans continued to criticize Williams online, saying he needed Hayes to stay relevant. He responded to those claims during the interview, saying the negative comments don’t matter. He noted that he had goals before and after teaming with Hayes and that he’s focusing on achieving them rather than being upset over online negativity.

“I see a lot of the comments online,” Trick Williams began. “When you hop on your timeline, people are gonna talk. If we care about the craft, you might look. I see negative comments all the time. I see positive comments all the time. But regardless, the sun gonna rise the next day and I gotta get back to work.

“I see it all, but regardless, I had goals, I had dreams, I had a vision before I was teamed up with Melo, after I was with Melo, to achieve. So it doesn’t really matter what anybody says. I ain’t gotten there yet, so I’m gonna keep grinding,” Trick Williams said.
