AJ Styles reveals that one of his most recent matches was a do-over for the fans.
AJ Styles appeared on WWE Now before going on to make his retirement speech on this week’s episode of RAW, which was a tribute show for him. During the conversation, the Phenomenal One opened up about his favorite matches and moments and revealed his clash against Shinsuke Nakamura at Saturday Night’s Main Event last month was a do-over for the fans who didn’t like their encounter at WrestleMania 34.
He expressed happiness in competing against John Cena at Crown Jewel 2025, and also named Cena’s match against CM Punk at Night of Champions 2025 as one of his favorite WWE moments.
“Of course, I have favorite moments, matches,” AJ Styles began. “But there’s so many that I can’t just throw them out there. Let’s talk about the most recent favorite. Shinsuke Nakamura and myself had an unbelievable match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. I’m probably proud of that match because I know a lot of people didn’t like the first one we had in WWE. So I think we made up for it.
“The match with John Cena at Crown Jewel in Australia. Man, I was so glad I got to wrestle that guy. Punk having that match with him. These are all the matches that I didn’t think I’d have the opportunity to have at the end of my career, and was able to pull off some unbelievable matches and unbelievable moments,” AJ Styles said.
AJ Styles revealed who he didn’t get the chance to compete against in his final run
Speaking further, AJ Styles named Penta and Chad Gable as two superstars he would’ve loved to compete against in his final WWE run.
“There are some guys I wanted to work with and didn’t have a chance to. But I have worked with them, meaning I’ve tagged with them. I would’ve liked to be in there with Penta, to go back and forth. I’d love to get back in the ring with Chad Gable. I say I’d love that, but here I am retired. So that’s not gonna happen. The old timers, we always say this, because I’m one of those guys now, ‘Oh, we would’ve had a great match with that kid.’ There’s so many of those guys here,” AJ Styles said.
