WWE SmackDown Star Returns to the Ring After Year-Plus Absence

For weeks, eagle-eyed fans noticed a familiar face lingering just outside the spotlight on WWE SmackDown. On February 6, he was seen backstage in a segment with Matt Cardona and Kit Wilson — laughing, watching, waiting. This week, the wait ended.

Apollo Crews has officially returned to in-ring action on SmackDown for the first time in over 13 months.

Crews had not competed on the blue brand since suffering a torn pectoral muscle during a January 2025 match against Johnny Gargano.

The injury sidelined him for most of the year. Although he quietly worked his way back with matches on WWE Main Event, in AAA, and even an NXT dark match, where he teamed with Elijah Holyfield.

The February 13 episode saw chaos break out before a scheduled United States Championship match between Carmelo Hayes and Ilja Dragunov. Solo Sikoa and the MFTs — Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, Talla Tonga and JC Mateo — ambushed Hayes and Dragunov in a five-on-two assault.

Help arrived quickly. Matt Cardona, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Crews evened the odds. This prompted SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis to turn the brawl into an impromptu 10-man tag team match.

That decision marked Crews’ first SmackDown match since his injury over a year ago.

While he had already returned to action during Main Event tapings in January 2026, this emerged as his true re-entry onto mainline WWE television competition.

For a former Intercontinental Champion and WrestleMania 37 Nigerian Drum Fight winner, stepping back into the SmackDown ring wasn’t just a comeback — it was a reminder.

After a year on the sidelines, Crews is no longer just standing in the background. He’s back between the ropes, and on SmackDown, that’s where opportunities are earned — one tag at a time.
