Baron Corbin got a really great response when he made his AEW debut on Wednesday night. As it turns out, it wasn’t even supposed to happen.
Corbin, now known as Bishop Dyer in MLW and the independent scene, competed in a dark match at Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite taping in Orlando. During his appearance on Sirius XM’s Off The Ropes, Dyer told his co-host, Jonathan Coachman, that he wasn’t even scheduled to wrestle that night.
“The whole thing started because I went to pick up Big Show. I went to take Big Show up to Orlando for the show, and to just see my people. They ended up switching their shows last night, adding Collision [after] Dynamite, because there’s supposed to be a snowstorm [in Arlington, Texas, the original host site, this weekend]. So they did it last night,” he explained.
“And of course, I think any wrestler on the planet knows the rule ‘always bring your gear.’ Just always bring it, so I threw it in the truck and brought it with me. I got there and I saw my man Billy Gunn, he’s like a dad to me. He’s always been my guy that I’ve leaned on through a lot of stuff in the wrestling world,” he explained. “They had the dark match, because he was working with his son, Austin. He’s like, ‘Hey man, do you want to be in this dark match with us?’ And I was like, ‘Dude, if it gets OK’d, I’m sold.’”
Baron Corbin aka Bishop Dyer reflects on getting cheered after being a villain
Dyer praised Tony Khan for giving his support, noting that Khan welcomed him with open arms. Dyer pointed out that it’s also interesting to see how people are still learning his new name. His entrance video said, “Bishop Dyer,” but they got louder once they saw him on the stage.
He said he was used to a “career of boos,” so it was nice to hear the crowd pop for him, even on little things like tagging in.
“There’s nothing in this world that feels like that when you get that kind of reaction, booing or cheering.”
Bishop Dyer is set to appear at MLW Battle Riot VIII in Orlando on January 29. He is one-half of the MLW World Tag Team Champions with Donovan Dijak.
