A WWE SmackDown star reveals how and why they learned American Sign Language (ASL).
Speaking to host Mike Brindisi on a recent episode of Good News York, WWE SmackDown star Michin opened up about knowing American Sign Language. She noted that she learned ASL when she was dating someone from Gallaudet University, which is a private federally chartered university in Washington, D.C., for the deaf and hard of hearing.
“I dated somebody from Gallaudet University, which is a deaf and hard-of-hearing school in DC. My school played his school for volleyball, and that’s how we met. I knew no sign language, so for the first couple of months, it was just like writing notes to each other, and then he started teaching me sign language, and then I picked up on it,” the WWE star said.
“I spent a lot of time at Gallaudet as well. So, I was able to really be immersed into that lifestyle. So it helped me really understand, and I picked up on ASL super quick just because I had to. Because I had several friends there, I had my ex-boyfriend there.
“To me, I would rather learn your language than having to make you write notes all the time. Like, let me learn so it will be easier to communicate for everybody. So, it’s really cool. I still love Gallaudet. I love that there is a school for the deaf and hard-of-hearing in DC, and I’m glad that I got to learn ASL and be a part of that culture,” the WWE star said.
