This AEW star confirms concussion issues were the reason for his extended in-ring absence.
During a recent appearance on Casual Conversations with The Classic, former ROH Pure Champion Wheeler Yuta revealed that concussion issues forced him to take a break from wrestling in 2024.
“One (standout moment) that kind of sticks in my head a little bit coming back from — so I had some issues with concussions and then coming back from that, I wrestled Lee Moriarty for the Ring of Honor Pure Championship and I wound up losing that one. That was at the Esports arena in Arlington, and I wound up losing that one and losing my championship.
“But just from a personal standpoint, Lee is another one of those guys, much like (Daniel) Garcia, we always were sort of competing on the independents to see who was better, who would get to that next level… Our careers were intertwined in many ways. So, being able to wrestle him in a high-stakes, featured match on pay-per-view for Ring of Honor was something that was really special to me and also, it was a really good — I don’t know if confidence booster is the right word but it was a good way for me to feel like, okay, I’m fully back.
“Coming back from an injury, a lot of it is physical but a lot of it too is just mental of just can I still and do what I did before? And that was the night where I felt like, ‘Okay, I’m here, I’m back, I’m ready to go,’ so, that was a really special night for me and I think because it was on a pay-per-view, a lot less people saw it than the Rampage match which is on TV, but, if you have a chance, I think it’s on YouTube now. I’d go seek that one out.” [H/T Fightful]
Wheeler Yuta is a member of the Death Riders in AEW, alongside Jon Moxley, PAC, Marina Shafir, Daniel Garcia, and Claudio Castagnoli.
