Bryan Danielson contemplates the possibility of wrestling a former foe in AEW.
The rivalry between Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness has been somewhat renewed over the last year as McGuinness continues to take verbal shots at him on AEW commentary. Notably, McGuinness has repeatedly referred to Danielson as a “clam digger.”
As McGuinness keeps up this pattern of belittling Danielson, many fans have raised interest in seeing the two square up in the wrestling ring one more time. During a recent interview on Casual Conversations with The Classic, Danielson addressed the possibility. While intrigued by this idea, Danielson isn’t completely sure if it would live up to the expectations set by the fans.
“I would love to wrestle Nigel. I get afraid of fan expectations, what it would be,” Danielson said. “I don’t know how many people have actually seen our matches, but they were very physical matches. That’s the thing that I would be afraid of, is people’s expectations of what they think it should be. It’s like if, not that they would do it now, but if they did it when they were like 55, Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat.
“By the way, I would bet at 55 with both of them, it would be fantastic. Ricky Steamboat is just unbelievable able still. He was just there for Revolution for Sting’s last match. He’s just great and he’s in great shape all that kind of stuff. But I guess that would be my big fear, is fan expectation.”
For the last 13 years, McGuinness has primarily positioned himself behind the commentary desk. This past March, however, the former ROH World Champion noted that he had recently stepped into ring and felt “perfectly okay.” As of now, though, there is no word on if McGuinness is planning to formally return to in-ring action.
