Last night in the main event of AEW Dynamite, Swerve Strickland wrestled Konosuke Takeshita to earn a chance to compete against Samoa Joe for the AEW World Title at the upcoming Dynasty pay-per-view. The leader of the Mogul Affiliates managed to pick up the win.
Following the match, Strickland appreciated Takeshita. But the reason Strickland won was only because he wanted the number one contender spot more.
“Now that is a battle. That’s what makes AEW, unlike any other place on planet Earth. Guys like Takeshita, they wanna try to kill you. Take you out. In order to be Number One in this business, to go after Championship Gold. It all comes down to who wants it more. And that is what Swerve is all about.”
Strickland also sent a message to Samoa Joe. He’s determined to become the first-ever African American AEW World Champion.
“In case you forgot how I got here, it’s from endurance, resiliency, and getting back up. I’ve been hit hard time and time again from some of the best this industry has ever had. And I get back up. I know what my goal is and I’m going to keep fighting for it. Body parts dismantled or not, I’m a real one. And Joe knows that. Contract signing next week. I get to look you right in your eye, right across the table, and I get to sign my way into history. Into my destiny. And that’s becoming the first African-American AEW World Champion of of you Joe. Don’t feel bad. No. Take pride in that, take pride in the fact that you get to lose your championship to a history-maker. To a living legend, to a upcoming icon. Take pride,” Swerve Strickland said.
