FTR dropped the AEW World Tag Team Championship on the October 7 episode of AEW Collision. The dominant win for Big Bill and Ricky Starks shocked many fans, and a new report shines some light on the situation.
Heading into the bout, Wheeler was reportedly dealing with broken ribs. During the title match, he took a chokeslam through a broadcast table. He was then effectively taken out of the action.
In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote that Wheeler is banged up, but the nature of the title change was pitched by Dax Harwood. Per Meltzer, Wheeler had X-rays, but they were negative, so he does not need time off, and he could have done a full match. However, the idea was to put Bill and Starks over and give Collision a major moment.
Update On Potential Rematch For FTR
After their title win, Starks and Big Bill stated that FTR will not get a rematch. But Meltzer noted that the two teams will likely meet again, either on October 28 or November 4.
It’s also important to note that The Young Bucks earned a title shot at AEW WrestleDream. It seemed like they would get a rematch with FTR, likely at AEW Full Gear on November 18. However, it’s unclear whether the potential rematch is still in the cards.
WrestleZone will provide more information as it becomes available.
