Mike Santana and Ortiz had an incredible run as a tag team in the world of professional wrestling.
All Elite Wrestling‘s Mike Santana was a recent guest on SEScoops. When asked about his time in a tag team with Ortiz, Santana said it’s a point in his career he’ll look back on very fondly, but now it’s time to focus on himself.
“Yeah, man. I look back on it very fondly, honestly,” Mike Santana admitted. “Like you said, it was an amazing run. We did some really cool stuff; we traveled the world together. We literally became one of the best tag teams in the world. You know, we literally made something from nothing. Just two Puerto Rican kids from New York that had a dream and the balls to chase it like we always used to say.
“Him and I, we’ve known each other since we were doing backyard wrestling as teenagers, so there’s a lot of history there. But during that time, one thing I could always say about Ortiz and I that when it came to — of course, we’re not going to agree with everything, right? That’s like working with them. Right? We’re humans.
“We each have a different outlook on things, and that’s normal. That’s human nature. But a lot of the time, when it came to our chemistry, it’s unmatched. I honestly feel like no matter what may have been going on, personally between us or what may have we’ve been dealing with or whatever. When that bell rang, honestly, there was nobody touching us.
“And that was the mentality that we had. And I think that mentality is what got us to where we were at. The fact that we stepped into every single match with this shit is ours. It belongs to us. And when we were at our hottest man, we were rockin’ and rollin’. It got to a point where we didn’t we barely had to say much to each other.
“We were just so comfortable and so, in our groove, that we would be like, aight. We just gave each other a look, and it was a wrap from there. But I enjoyed it, and we did a lot. But sometimes in life like, with anything, there comes a certain point where it’s like, Alright, now what’s next?
“And now I feel like just me personally; I felt like it was that time. Like our personal things are our personal things. It is what it is, but me personally, I’ve done a lot of the things I’ve wanted to do. We did more than what I expected us to do, and I’m happy with it. And I’m content with it, and now it’s just time to focus on myself and do what I gotta do.”
When asked if he felt that he and Ortiz could become good again down the road outside of wrestling, Santana said he hoped so.
“I hope so. But that’s something that him and I need to deal with,” Mike Santana said. “You know what I mean? Outside of wrestling and outside of that. Do I think it’s something that may happen now? Maybe not. But again, we’re pros. We’re going to do what we got to do. I’m sure people have seen we’re working together in some form to do what we got to do. And yeah, the future is the future. I’m more focused on what we’re doing today and what’s going on today, and that’s what it is.”
