After decades of entertaining fans on the mic and inside the ring, Ric Flair has finally decided to reveal the genesis of one of his most iconic promos.
During a recent appearance on Everyone Talks to Liz Clamon, The Nature Boy said he wrote his popular “Rolex-wearing, diamond ring-wearing, kiss stealing, wheeling dealing, limousine riding, jet flying, son of a gun” promo all by himself.
“Everybody hates the bad guy. Everybody hates the truth,” Ric Flair said. “To this day, the line about the ‘Rolex-wearing’… If I am at an event, or a signing, I hear that same line. ‘Say it one time for me.’ People ask me to say that line and turn on their recorders. I laugh because it [the promo] is something I thought of one morning at 9 o’clock after about four cups of coffee. No sleep and being out in Buckhead all night.”
Flair previously said people ask him to this day about the origins of the promo, noting that charisma wasn’t something he had to work on because he was born with it.
“It’s a gift god gave me … I swear. People, to this day, walk up to me and ask me, ‘Who wrote down all that stuff?’ I say, ‘Nobody, man.’ Right after a night out in Buckhead, and two cups of coffee [laughs]. Buckhead was fun in those old days [laughs]. h/t WrestlingInc.
What makes a ‘great’ match
Flair also talked about his rivalry with Ricky Steamboat and what it takes to build a “great match.”
“I think one of the most important ingredients is the chemistry between the two people,” Flair said. “They’ve got to have decent chemistry they initially build off of. Or they’ll get it with each other through having to wrestle with each other a number of times.”
The two-time WWE Hall of Famer further stated that Sasha Banks and his own daughter Charlotte Flair’s chemistry reminded him of himself and Steamboat.
“I look back and I know Sasha Banks, one of my favorites. She and my daughter (Charlotte Flair) remind me of me and Ricky Steamboat. We just had unbelievable chemistry,” Ric Flair said.
