Darby Allin never wants to become a parody of himself.
Darby Allin may only be 30 years old, but he’s always looking toward his future. That future, of course, includes a retirement plan for himself. In a recent interview with SHAK Wrestling, Allin addressed a previous statement he made, in which he said he wasn’t looking for a lengthy wrestling career. In reflecting on that statement, Allin believes that same mentality still applies in the present day.
“I’d like to say I have the same timeline, but like I said earlier, with wherever the wind takes me, if I really feel like I have a message, I want to stay with it. But at the moment, that message dies and it feels like I’ve become a parody of myself, I’m out. I’m out. I refuse to become a parody of myself,” Allin said. And that’s like the big thing is you’re talking about smiles with Darby. It’s like there’s a lot I have to prove.”
“And trust me, I still have a chip on my shoulder. There’s still a lot I want to prove. And a big thing is becoming a [AEW] World Champion, but I’m happy because I know exactly where I’m at in my life and where I’m going and stuff like that. It wasn’t always like that. There was a lot of like, you never knew, where do I fit on this whole scale of national TV? Do X, Y and Z. Where do I fit in it? And now I know exactly where I fit, and that’s the main event scene, baby.”
As Allin alluded to, he will compete for the AEW World Championship at AEW Double or Nothing this Sunday. There, he challenges MJF in a fatal-four-way match involving himself, MJF, “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry, and Sammy Guevara.
