The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) continue to build their legacy, but they also want to help the next generation.
At NXT Deadline, Kingston and Woods defeated Pretty Deadly (Kit Wilson and Elton Prince) to win the NXT Tag Team Championship. In doing so, they captured their 12th tag team titles overall in WWE. (Along with Big E, the trio previously won the tag team titles 11 times). The victory gave marked the New Day’s first reign with the gold in NXT, so they are now the second Grand Slam Tag Team Champions in WWE history. The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder) was the first.
Speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Kingston and Woods discussed their monumental win. Kingston praised their opponents and stated that they’re going to get better from here on out. He made it clear that he and Woods want to help them flourish.
“Pretty Deadly is so talented,” said Kingston. “They’re going to be even bigger than they are now. It’s all about getting experience and getting in there with experienced superstars, then spreading their wings to fly. Anything we can do to help that, we’re here for it. We want them to flourish. That’s what we’re here to do, and I’m looking forward to mixing it up again.
Woods also shared his thoughts, as he emphasized that he and Kingston have the responsibility of helping the next generation by teaching them what they know. He also stated that he and Kingston enjoyed being able to tell stories the way they like to, as they did on Saturday.
“Everybody brought their full selves to that match, which was easy to tell,” Woods said. “We love getting a chance to tell our stories in the way we want to tell them. It is the job of the current generation to give their knowledge to the next generation, so that will be the best era of pro wrestling. That’s very important to us, and it’s a responsibility for us to teach what we know.
Kingston went on to compliment the connection Wilson and Prince have. He stated that the New Day’s bond has set them apart, and no one in wrestling history compares to the trio. The former WWE Champion also made it clear that their goal is to do it all.
“During the match with Pretty Deadly, I was impressed by their connection,” said Kingston. “That’s what has made us so special. Me, Woods, and E, we have a connection unlike any you’ve ever seen in WWE. You can’t compare us to anyone in wrestling history. We’ve done it in a way nobody else has, and we are very proud of that. We want to do it all, and do it all in a way no one else can.”
