MJF continues to tease his plans for the future.
For the past several months, the AEW star has frequently talked about “the Bidding War of 2024”, his name for his looming free agency, both on AEW programming and in other interviews. “The Salt of the Earth” is an AEW original, and he has gradually become one of the company’s top stars. He defeated Jon Moxley to win the AEW World Championship at AEW Full Gear, but the Dynamite Diamond Ring winner’s future remains up in the air.
After reports indicated that MJF was frustrated with his contract, the young star spent a number of weeks off AEW TV following a fiery promo (in which he told company president Tony Khan to fire him) following the June 1 episode of AEW Dynamite. He later returned at AEW All Out on September 4, so the two sides reached some sort of agreement, at least in the short-term future. In a recent interview, MJF insisted that he hasn’t signed a contract extension with the company.
Speaking with TODAY.com, Khan commented on MJF’s contract situation. Without going into specifics, he stated that the champion is “well aware” that he wants to keep him with the company.
“It’s certainly something he knows is a priority for AEW and me personally,” Khan said.
Meanwhile, MJF is focused on building his legacy and making money. He noted that, based on his current trajectory, he could leave wresting at the age of 27, and he’d have already crafted a legacy that will stand the test of time.
“If with the trajectory that I’m on right now as the World Heavyweight Champion, if I continue to create incredible moments for wrestling fans up until 2024, I feel even if I left them at the tender age of 27, I will have left an everlasting legacy in the history of this business, and you’re welcome,” he said.
The AEW World Champion was also asked whether he is happy, and he responded by making it clear that he’s feeling good. He again teased that he could leave the business entirely at some point, though his true plans remain a mystery.
“How couldn’t I be? I am in a spot that everyone is envious (of),” MJF said. “I am the AEW World Champion and I’m a generational talent and I’m literally the most talked about name in professional wrestling today. I’ve managed to do that in a company that’s only three years old. I’m feeling good, man. The best thing is — is we’ll see how much longer I feel like being a part of this circus.”
MJF will defend the AEW World Championship against Ricky Starks on the December 14 episode of AEW Dynamite.
