Shawn Michaels: I Thought My Character Would Be Manly, Suddenly I Was Wearing Ass-Less Chaps

Shawn Michaels says wearing ass-less chaps got easier over time.

In the 1990s, Michaels became one of WWE’s top stars, and he stood out with his brash attitude and his flamboyant outfits. “The Heartbreak Kid” danced around the ring and donned ass-less chaps as part of his entrance gear. His character continued to evolve over the years, and he left some of these aspects behind as he got older.

Speaking on the Games with Names podcast, Michaels discussed his legendary “Sexy Boy” song and noted that Jimmy Hart asked him to sing it, even though he insisted tat he couldn’t carry a note. He stated that Hart and the others who were involved worked their magic in order to create the final product.

Sexy boy song “Yeah, so I ended up singing it. Jimmy Hart wrote it, and originally, Sensational Sherri sung it. Then Jimmy Hart came to me one time, he was like, ‘Hey, we’re thinking, we got this great idea, maybe you sing your song.’ I said, Jimmy, I can’t carry a note. My voice is deep, I can’t sing at all. He says, ‘Don’t you worry, we’ll get in the studio. We got all this stuff we can do, we can fix it.’ I was like, alright. I’ll give it a try. But yeah, so I mean, I can’t carry a note to save my life. But they somehow, they do all that cool stuff they do with music.

The WWE Hall of Famer then described how he initially thought his character would be more manly, but it started to evolve with the music, his dancing, and ass-less chaps becoming part of his presentation. He noted that this evolution got easier with time, and it felt more natural as he became one with the character.

“Look, when I was going through this process of that song and my character and everything else, in the theater in your mind, you picture yourself maybe being a bit more, I don’t know, manly and I figured it would be like, I don’t know, more rougher, tougher ass-kicking type guy. But then all of a sudden, I turned into this dude wearing ass-less chaps and shaking my ass and dancing and half strip-teasing and stuff like that. But the more I did it, the more natural, just the better it felt. I could just really unleash and sort of become whatever it is I wanted.

“But I never imagined it that way. Same with the music. It just got to where it ended up just being perfect for me, but it wasn’t my idea by any stretch. It was just something that sort of happened and that I morphed into with the music and with the gear. The more I went out there, the more I sent out there with Sherri, the more comfortable I got with it. It just [got] to where me and the character were damn near identical.”
