CM Punk is on the road to recovery.
On the June 3 episode of AEW Rampage, the reigning AEW World Champion stated that he needed surgery because he had a broken “wheel.” He made it clear that he was willing to relinquish the title, but company president Tony Khan wouldn’t let him.
In an update, during the June 8 episode of AEW Dynamite, the broadcast team announced that Punk had surgery on his “lower leg”, and the procedure was a success. They noted that doctors were encouraged by the outcome. As of this writing, it’s unclear how long “The Second City Saint” will be out of action.
In the meantime, AEW will crown an Interim World Champion at AEW x NJOW Forbidden Door. Jon Moxley defeated Kyle O’Reilly, who won a Casino Battle Royale, on the June 8 episode of AEW Dynamite to advance to the title match. He will face the winner of Hiroshi Tanahashi’s match with Hirooki Goto at NJPW Dominion on June 12.
