From the start, The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) wanted to make tag team wrestling matter again, and this mission became one of their primary objectives in the foundational stages of AEW.
Now that the promotion has established itself, the former AEW World Champions can look back and see a number of memorable tag team bouts that the company has featured in its early years. Of course, the Bucks have been involved in several of these remarkable contests, like their instant classic against FTR on the April 6 episode of AEW Dynamite.
In an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Matt and Nick Jackson shared their thoughts on the state of AEW’s tag team division. Matt noted that seeing other teams thrive motivates the duo to push themselves to make sure that they’re never outmatched. He also noted that the brothers want tag team wrestling to flourish without them, too. Matt went on to express his belief that the spotlight on tag team wrestling has never been brighter, and he’s proud of that.
“Nothing motivates me more than when other teams are tearing it up,” Matt said. “That gives us drive and reason to work harder. We never want to be outperformed or outclassed. And it’s important for tag team wrestling to strive without us. When we decided to team all of those years ago, our main goal was to make tag team wrestling important again in wrestling.
