AEW President Tony Khan expects bidding wars for some of his top stars, and he thinks it’ll be good for the wrestlers.
MJF, one of AEW‘s brightest star, has openly talked about WWE’s potential interest in him once his contract is up in 2024, and it’s easy to imagine other AEW standouts at least listening if WWE makes an offer. After all, former AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes recently left the company and signed with WWE.
In an interview with Marc Raimondi of ESPN, when asked if he expects bidding wars for his talent, Khan explained that he does, given the strength of AEW’s shows and the overall star power of the roster. He noted that free-agent signings are part of the business and stated that it’s beneficial for the wrestlers.
“Yeah, I am,” said Khan. “We have a lot of great wrestlers here. I expect there probably will be down the road interest in some of them, because we’re putting on such strong shows. I think there’s bound to be free-agent movement. On both sides of the competition. I think it’s great for the wrestlers.
Likewise, Khan noted that something like Rhodes’ departure and subsequent signing with WWE was “bound to happen.
“It’s not anything unusual to see stars coming from other promotions, including WWE, into AEW,” said Khan. “I think it is now a little different to see a star from AEW go onto WWE television. I think as the years go by — we’re a young promotion — it was bound to happen sooner or later. And now it has.”
In the same interview, Khan explained that he has been stacking up AEW’s roster in order to make the company even stronger and deeper.
