Paul Wight has been a heel, and a babyface, (and then a heel and babyface again, and again…) but he says he enjoys being a jack of all trades so he can perform whatever role is asked of him.
During an appearance on The Rob Brown Show, Paul Wight was asked about turning babyface and heel over the years, and which role he liked playing most. Wight said that he believes playing a heel is the right role for a man of his stature, but he still really enjoys doing the interactive stories and being well-rounded enough to pull it off.
“It’s funny, I love all of those. I think what suits my presence and size is when I’m a bad guy, I’m a heel in our business. It’s an easier story to tell because we’ve all seen ‘David and Goliath’ and know ‘it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog’ and all of that other motivational stuff that sinks in with us on a deep psychological level. People understand overcoming big obstacles, whether it’s hurdles in their life or even through evolution,” Wight explained, “we’ve had to evolve and overcome hurdles. So seeing a physical representation of that in the ring portraying a character that is not necessarily popular, it’s a much easier pendulum to swing as a talent.
“It’s a little harder to get sympathy, it’s a little harder for the performer to create a story in which you’re vulnerable or a smaller guy can get you in a vulnerable position physically, so it’s a harder story to tell. I think personally, I like doing the more interactive, fun stuff where the energy is high. I’ve been lucky enough in being able to keep a job for a long time because I’ve been versatile. I think it’s a jack of all trades, master of none,” Wight joked, “so the versatility has kept me around for a long time.”
Wight also spoke about some fun plans he and Tony Khan have in store at AEW, including the resurrection of the “Captain Insano” character. Read about how AEW has secured the rights to the gimmick and when Wight will bring the character to TV at this link.
