Former 16-time WWE Champion John Cena is reportedly “locked-in” to work the main event of this year’s SummerSlam pay-per-view.
The rumored plan in recent weeks would see John Cena challenge Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship, but recent reports of Cena accepting a role in the new movie “Argylle,” which is set to film at some point in August created some doubt whether Cena would be able to work SummerSlam after all.
However, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reports that John Cena is, in fact, “locked-in” for the main event of SummerSlam against Roman Reigns:
“No word on when he shows up for television, but Cena is free of responsibilities for acting work at this point and until after SummerSlam. Cena vs. Reigns is locked in as the main event for the show. However, Cena is in a movie called “Argylle,” a spy thriller which will be shooting in Europe in August. It’s possible he could start after or end prior to the date, or even get a few days off.”
While it’s unknown when John Cena will return to WWE programming to begin the hype train for his Summer Slam match against The Tribal Chief, earlier reports suggested that Cena could return as soon as next week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown when WWE returns to the road to perform in front of the WWE Universe.
