As WrestleMania 35 draws closer, the excitement behind the triple threat match for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship continues to grow. For Becky Lynch, however, the match – and her WWE career – almost didn’t happen at all.
In an interview with CBS New York’s Chuck Carroll, Lynch revealed that after signing a developmental contract with the WWE and beginning work in NXT, she was nearly fired. “I got a couple of text messages this week from people here at work and NXT or worked in the office side of things. (They said) I don’t know if you knew this, but there are some people that wanted to fire you when you were in NXT,” she revealed.
According to Lynch, her self-confidence took a major hit when she entered into wrestling, especially throughout the beginning of her career. “I came in with such low confidence, and such low self-esteem, I really had to believe in myself, more than anything,” she said. “But there was always a part of me that was like, ‘Nah, you’ve got something, you’ve got something different, you’ve gotta let it out.’ But I have to allow myself the opportunity. If it wasn’t for those fans making their voices heard…”
The entire interview is well worth the read, but as Lynch put it, many in the business thought she didn’t have the “it” factor, and wouldn’t be good enough to make it. Obviously, she’s since proved many doubters wrong, and will look to continue doing that next week when she takes on Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair and tries to become the next RAW Women’s Champion.
