SummerSlam 2002 is generally regarded as one of the best WWE events of all time. And while the quality of the matches certainly played a role, history would reveal that 15 world champions competed on the card, contributing to that event’s current status.
SummerSlam 2017 is aiming to shatter the number of world champions competing in a single event.
As of August 1st, the card has 6 men who have held a world title in WWE scheduled to compete – Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, Jinder Mahal, Kevin Owens, AJ Styles, and Randy Orton.
Chances are high that an additional 8 former world champions will appear – Bray Wyatt, Dean Ambrose, Finn Balor, Jeff Hardy, John Cena, Seth Rollins, Sheamus, and The Miz. (This doesn’t include other former world champions who are less likely to appear such as Dolph Ziggler, Triple H, Kane, Big Show, Chris Jericho, Mark Henry – or Matt Hardy if you consider the ECW Championship a WWE world title).

Including the female superstars, there are another 4 world champions to already add to the list with Alexa Bliss, Bayley, Natalya, and Naomi.
And there are a solid 7 superstars that are likely to be future world champions in Baron Corbin, Big Cass, Samoa Joe, Rusev, Braun Stroman, Shinsuke Nakamura, and maybe even Sami Zayn who are already on the SummerSlam card or will probably added.
When it’s all said and done, history may look back on SummerSlam 2017 as one of the most stacked WWE events ever with anywhere from 20-25 (or even more) WWE superstars who have been world champion.
