WWE NXT Hits And Misses (7/23/24)

Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly WWE NXT hits and misses series.

Last night’s episode featured some cool in-ring action. NXT’s partnership with TNA continued as well on the road to The Great American Bash.

Here’s what went down on 7/23 NXT.

Hit – Josh Briggs vs. Brooks Jensen

Josh Briggs and Brooks Jensen were the opening match for this week’s WWE NXT. The former tag team partners took on each other in a No DQ match. Briggs got the match under control until Shawn Spears showed up to cause a distraction. Jensen picked up the win with a DDT on a steel chair. He then aligned himself with Spears.

NXT knows how to do gimmick matches. Jensen attacking Briggs while he was making his entrance was the perfect start to the match. The table spot was cool. Both men brutalized each other with kendo sticks and steel steps. This new alliance between Spears and Jensen looks promising.

Miss – Eddy Thorpe vs. Lexis King on WWE NXT

Eddy Thorpe and Lexis King worked the second match of the night. Thorpe picked up the win in under three minutes. King delivered a cheap shot to Thorpe after the match. He then destroyed Thorpe’s arm with his scepter.

A quick win for Thorpe that got overshadowed by King’s post-match assault on him. I really hope the scepter angle isn’t done to write off Thorpe due to some legitimate injury. He came back a few weeks ago.

Hit – Wren Sinclair gets her spot in NQCC

Wren Sinclair squared off against Brinley Reece in singles action on WWE NXT. Charlie Dempsey, Myles Borne and Tavion Heights were at ringside. Dempsey helped Wren pick up the win allowing her to become the newest member of No Quarter Catch Crew in the process.

The newest angle involving Wren and NQCC looks interesting. For those unware, Wren watched the group dump Damon Kemp. Kendal Gray tossed Borne like he was a toy. The look Dempsey had on his face knowing he just helped Wren join the group was priceless.

Miss – Pete Dunne attacks Trick Williams

Trick Williams was interrupted by Cedric Alexander during the opening promo setting up their match later for the night. Williams picked up the win following a Trick Shot. After the match, Pete Dunne attacked Williams. The Bruiserweight had turned heel two weeks ago on WWE RAW when he attacked Sheamus. The former tag team partners will go one-on-one on the final RAW before SummerSlam 2024.

I don’t know if I want to see a feud between Pete Dunne and Trick Williams on WWE NXT. They could’ve set up a lengthy feud between Trick and Cedric because the match they had last night was really good. I guess they had to do something with Dunne now that Tyler Bate in on the shelf. All the rant aside, at least Shawn Michaels has maintained consistency by making Dunne a heel on the his show as well.

Hit – Six-man tag team match on WWE NXT

Je’Von Evans joined forces with Axiom and Nathan Frazer against The Rascalz in a six-man tag team match in the main event. All six men showcased their brilliant athleticism. The Rascalz worked like a well-oiled machine. After the match, both sides showed respect to each other.

What a match! This NXT and TNA partnership gave us a PPV quality outing on a weekly TV. Every man in this match-up showed up and showed out. I’m so happy that Zachary Wentz is making the most out of his second chance in WWE NXT.

Honorable Mention

  • Joe Hendry got a video package on NXT this week. The promo featured tweets from Shawn Michaels and the WWE Universe. The Heartbreak Kid even made a cameo during this week’s episode. Happy belated birthday to the GOAT!
