Rey Mysterio recently returned to WWE television following months of in-ring absence. The Hall of Famer had surgery in November 2023. His last in-ring match saw him drop the United States Championship to Logan Paul at Crown Jewel 2023.
Fans expect a major program between Rey and his former protégé Santos Escobar at WrestleMania XL. Escobar was kayfabe responsible for putting his lWO mentor on the shelf months ago.
Rey is no stranger to competing on the Grandest Stage of Them All. He’s been a part of some big matches and moments at WWE’s Biggest PLE of the Year. Let’s take a look at some of Rey Mysterio’s best WrestleMania matches.
Vs. CM Punk (WrestleMania XXVI)
The foundation to Rey Mysterio’s epic rivalry with CM Punk was laid in this match. Punk was arguably the best heel on the WWE roster in 2010. His work with the Straight Edge Society was phenoemenal.
Rey was the perfect babyface against the Voice of the Voiceless and his evil, sadistic plans. Though not nearly as good as some of their other outings, the WrestleMania match had some good sequences and spots.
Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero (WrestleMania 21)
Without this match, we would never have gotten to the iconic Rey vs. Eddie feud in 2005. The WrestleMania 21 match was the precursor to Eddie’s ruthless heel turn in the later months. The pair were tag team champions by the time they went toe-to-toe against each other at WrestleMania 21.
Their singles match set the tone for rest of the night. Both men put on a decent performance at the Staples Center. Rey pulled off a surprise win against his tag team partner with a hurricanrana-assisted pin.
The Mysterios vs. Logan Paul & The Miz (WrestleMania 38)
Logan Paul formed an alliance with The Miz on the road to WrestleMania 38. The Maverick and the Hollywood A-lister joined forces against Rey and Dominik Mysterio in tag team action. The two teams collided on Night 1 (Saturday).
This was a fun match featuring some cool spots. Logan Paul impressive fans and peers alike with his performance. The Mysterios also deserve some credit for making the celebrity wrestler look good in the match.
Vs. Dominik Mysterio (WrestleMania 39)
The seeds for the father versus son match-up were planted at Clash at the Castle 2022. Dominik joined The Judgment Day against his father’s wishes. The evil faction would spend the next months tormenting Rey and those close to him.
The veteran performer was forced to jump ship from RAW to SmackDown. Dom would try to force Rey to hit him until he finally got his dad to snap. The night before their match saw Dominik walk out during Rey’s Hall of Fame speech.
Both men used months of build-up to tell a great story inside the ring. The crowd was red hot for Rey and wanted him to “spank” Dominik, which he did. My only issue with this match was that it didn’t need the interference angle from Judgment Day or Bad Bunny.
Rey Mysterio vs. Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton (WrestleMania 22)
Rey Mysterio had to deal with a great personal loss on the road to WrestleMania 22. The iconic luchadore lost Eddie Guerrero in November 2005. The tragic loss prompted Rey to pursue a world title to honor his fallen friend’s memory.
Rey competed in the 2006 Royal Rumble. He came out victorious by last eliminating Randy Orton. The Legend Killer would insert himself into the world title match against Kurt Angle by beating Rey at No Way Out 2006.
Both men would be inserted into the title match making it a triple threat. This was a great mix of fast-paced action and technical brilliance from Kurt Angle. Rey and Orton did a great job selling the champion’s offence.
The underdog would eventually emerge as the winner by pinning Orton for the title.
