Indie Wrestler Says She Started Wrestling Because She Got Shot

Joseline Navarro opens up about her entry into the world of pro wrestling.

For some performers, professional wrestling came as a way to follow in their family’s footsteps. For others, their in-ring journey began after the end of another athletic venture. In the case of former DPW Women’s Champion Joseline Navarro, the second rings true, though under some rather scary circumstances.

When asked to share a piece of lore about herself on Twitter/X, Navarro noted that: “I got shot so I started wrestling.” With many followers taken aback by this lore, Navarro later expanded upon her statement, writing, “I was at a party in Florida. Party got sprayed. That’s why I have that tattoo on my shoulder.”

In a recent interview with Voyage Ohio, Navarro clarified that the party took place while she was away on a track and field scholarship at a Florida school. One of the bullets shot at the party struck her hip, which effectively put an end to her track and field career. From there, Navarro returned home, continued to heal, and eventually researched nearby wrestling schools.

“I originally started training at Mega Championship Wrestling in Elyria, OH. Then switched over to Absolute Intense Wrestling in Cleveland, OH,” she said. “I was always an athlete and competed at high levels. I decided that I wanted to try wrestling. Now, I am one of the best wrestlers out here.”

Joseline Navarro Always Dreamed Of Wrestling

While she once set out on a track and field scholarship, Navarro tells WrestleZone’s Ella Jay that her initial dream centered on professional wrestling. The reason? Former WWE Women’s Champions Jazz and Jacqueline inspired her to do so.

It wasn’t until she saw current WWE Women’s World Champion Naomi, however, that the now-rising indie star fully circled back to professional wrestling.

“Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be a professional wrestler,” Navarro said. “I veered off of it a little bit when I started really excelling in track and field, but I wound up coming back around to wrestling. Growing up, I was able to see Jazz and Jacqueline, women that look like me. It made me excited because I’m like ‘Wow, they’re cool. they’re badass.’ They were beating up the guys and stuff. So I was like I want to do that too. I got a big brother and I grew up with a lot of boy cousins, so that’s what I was doing. Was just like, ‘Oh, they’re doing that. I want to do that too.’

“Even when I got away from it a little bit, it wound up pulling [me back],” she continued. “It was Naomi that pulled me back in to wrestling. When I seen her, I was like, “F*ck it. I gotta try it.’ But yeah, I always wanted to be a wrestler.”
