The March 11 episode of AEW Dynamite saw the crowd express themselves loudly once again. Controversial chants erupted around the arena throughout different parts of the show. These chants have been heard quite frequently over the past few months.
The show started with a tag team match featuring Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli against Konosuke Takeshita and Hechicero. As expected, the match was fast and physical from the very beginning.
Both teams traded heavy strikes and big moves. Near the end, the match had a controversial finish as Castagnoli took advantage when the referee was almost knocked out during the chaos in the ring. He poked Hechicero in the eye and rolled him up to get the pinfall victory.
After the match, Takeshita and members of the Don Callis Family surrounded Moxley in the ring. However, surprisingly, Takeshita refused to hit Moxley with a chair even though his teammates encouraged him to do so.
Anti-ICE Chants Ring Out During Konosuke Takeshita And Jon Moxley Segment
Amid all this, fans in the arena started chanting “F*ck Don Callis, F*ck ICE too.” The chants became one of the most talked-about parts online.
Later in the show, the chants came up again during a segment involving Brody King and Swerve Strickland. This reaction from fans has become a growing trend at AEW events lately.
The chants first gained attention during the February 5 episode of AEW Dynamite before a match between MJF and Brody King. Since then, similar chants have been heard at several AEW shows and have even caught the attention of mainstream media.
Many believe the chants are connected to Brody King’s public activism. The wrestler has openly supported immigration rights and once wore an “Abolish ICE” shirt during AEW Grand Slam Mexico.
These chants have created debate among wrestling fans and experts. Some people support fans expressing their views, while others believe political messages should stay out of wrestling. Former WCW President Eric Bischoff has also criticized the chants, saying they could turn away business partners.
