The IIconics had a special moment at WrestleMania 35, winning the Women’s Tag Team Championships. This was a special moment for Peyton Royce and Billie Kay, who trained together in their home country before being signed by the WWE.
For their WrestleMania bout, they paid tribute to two legends of the ring with their gear. They showed respect to two wrestlers who inspired them to step into the squared circle. Jessie McKay and Cassie Lee spoke about this in an interview on McKenzie Mitchell’s Threads series.
McKay’s horned headpiece was a more obvious nod to the movie Maleficent. However, the pair spoke about how The Rock and Eddie Guerrero inspired the outfits too.
Jessie McKay (formerly Billie Kay) said: “I followed your lead with our WrestleMania gear, because Cassie really really wanted it to be inspired by Eddie Guerrero.”
“I was like ‘perfect! I’m on board with that. Whatever you want to do, I’ll kind of mimic that in my gear’. It was his black tights with the multicolored flames on the side, so I was like ‘Awesome!’ It came together really easily, we both had the black gear with flames.”
The IIconics’ Jessie McKay Was Inspired By The Rock
Later on, McKay confirmed that both The Rock and the movie Maleficent inspired her gear for the same show.
Cassie Lee asked: “But yours was inspired by The Rock,” before McKay continued:
“We had the same colors, especially on our butt with ‘The IIconics’, but I had horns made because The Rock is my biggest inspiration for wrestling. Bless his heart, he wore black trunks and black boots, so how? I can’t put a Brahma Bull on my arse! So, I decided to get horns done. I was a massive Malificent fan as well, so the horns were my – we had our own ‘Rock and Eddie’ moment at WrestleMania.”
Lee added, finally: “That was really cool. It was the two people who really inspired us into wrestling, at the WrestleMania where we won the titles. I think that is pretty special.”
