Mick Foley Reflects On The Legacy Of His Hell In A Cell Match With The Undertaker

Mick Foley looks back on his classic Hell in a Cell Match against The Undertaker.

June 28 marks the 25-year anniversary of WWE King of the Ring 1998, where “The Phenom” battled Mankind (Foley) in a Hell in a Cell Match. In one of the most unforgettable moments in WWE history, The Undertaker threw Mankind off the top of the cell. Foley then continued to fight, and The Undertaker chokeslammed him through the ceiling of the cell and down to the mat. Both spots went down in WWE history, as they’re still talked about today.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Foley discussed the match on its anniversary. Dave LaGreca noted that it might be the most talked-about match and moment in wrestling history.

“It could be. I don’t know of many matches that people celebrate the anniversary of,” Foley said. “I don’t know if you guys have had a chance to see the YouTube video that WWE put out, where The Undertaker and I rewatched the match together. But for someone like myself, who’s really tough on their own body of work, I always go, ‘Ah, it’s okay,’ but I’m very seldom really pleased with what I do. I thought that was really well done, and we talked about that fact, that there’s only a handful of matches, and maybe this is in the top one of two of that handful, that people consciously celebrate every year.

“We had no idea when it happened, or even in the aftermath, that… we felt like it was special, but there’s a lot of great stuff out there that is quickly forgotten. So I’m just glad that for any number of reasons, including the commentary of JR and Jerry Lawler and those iconic, ‘With god as my witness, he’s been broken in half,’ and Jerry Lawler with, ‘That’s it, he’s dead, somebody stop the damn match,’ we didn’t know that those calls were being made. There’s so many elements that went into it.

Foley also made it clear that he’s proud that they were able to finish the match, considering the brutal beating his body had taken.
