The rumors were flying around about a WWE PPV dedicated entirely to the women’s division. First thing that came to mind is that this is not the first company to do this. Many independent companies run shows just like this. For years now. Is it huge news that WWE is doing this? Of course it is. But I do not work for the WWE. I am a coach and trainer so I look what this could mean long term.
Will this be like the 90s when every bodybuilder showed up to wrestling schools thinking they could be a star? Later realizing it is too difficult and quit. Will it be like most of the 2000s where any kid who ever backyard wrestled thought he could make it because a guy on tv seems to be his size and wrestles in shorts and a t-shirt? What am I getting at? Will this usher in a time where we see many more women attempting to be wrestlers? Who knows? I just go by track records. I saw a slight uptick on women being interested during the start of “The Women’s Revolution” so I could foresee more women now being inspired by the “Evolution“.
I also have to address one thing. A thing that many do not see on the outside. That is women just starting out tend to garner more money for matches. There are a slew of reasons why. Some legitimate and they make sense, all the way to the less noble of reasons. But I will say this, if more women become wrestlers then the market will be flooded. Thus women matches and women who wrestle cease to be “special attractions” which in turns means less money. Those are the facts of the business. On the independent scene they will hit the lows of valley for paydays. But keep in mind that is on the independent scene. In the bigger federations like WWE this will actually mean better pay for women. Once they can establish the division, give it the attention it needs plus be consistent, you will then see the women getting much deserved raise in pay plus even more respect.
I am a father of two girls. I coach quite a few at The World Famous Monster Factory. I tell my female students what I tell my daughters, “I am going to push you harder than I would to most men/boys.” Because that is how hard it is for women today. You owe it to you and everyone else that came before to put in the work. To be a good example. Because the minute you don’t. The minute you screw up, they will say….See. That girl didn’t belong here. Don’t give them an excuse to ever say that. Ever!”
