Bret Hart Trashes Fabulous Freebirds
Bret “The Hitman” Hart recently did an interview with Forbes.com and discussed a few names he’d like to see included in the WWE Hall of Fame, including Rick Rude, Demolition and of course, his late brother Owen Hart. When the topic of recent inductees came up, Bret was not kind to 2016 Hall of Fame members, The Fabulous Freebirds.
“Why have they been overlooked when you can induct the Freebirds, who never did squat in WWE? Ever. Never drew any money, never did anything. When I remember the Freebirds, they were all drunk and passed out at the gate at one of the airports in my first day in WWF. None of them even made the show that day, they were too drunk to make their plane.”
If the Hitman is really only focused on pro wrestlers and what they accomplished during their runs in WWE (then WWF), he has a point. As a team the Freebirds – made up of Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, Buddy Roberts, and Jimmy Garvin – barely had a cup of coffee in the promotion. But it was their work in the territories, specifically in World Class Championship Wrestling, but also in various other southern promotions, that landed them in the Hall of Fame earlier this year. Their WCCW program with the Von Erichs, and AWA feud against the Road Warriors alone were huge draws in the 1980s.
