This was certainly the week of tributes to the ‘American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes. The outpouring of support from those in the wrestling industry, to those of us on the fringe of the business, and all the way up to mainstream media, shows just how loved Big Dust was to everyone. He was a true legend among legends in wrestling.
On a personal note, I did attempt to write an emotional piece on the life and times of Dusty after the news broke of his passing, and it became too difficult. I don’t feel as though anything I have to offer on such an extraordinary soul could really do any justice.
My one and only Dusty story dates back a few years to a midwest fan fest a few hours south of Chicago. I was there to visit a few friends and say ‘hello’ to a few legends I hadn’t yet had the pleasure of speaking with. A few times I attempted to introduce myself to Dusty, but he was always surrounded by someone, never without a smile on his face.
I headed to the men’s room before hitting the road, and who should I run into but the Dream himself. I didn’t want to be one of those awkward fans that talked to celebrities in the bathroom, so I simply nodded and went about my business. Before leaving the Hall of Famer shouted over, “hey daddy, be careful, the water runs hot and they’re all out of towels.”
The water runs hot. Life advice from Dusty Rhodes.
