Major Details on UK Celebrity Wrestling Show on ITV, Piper, More

Thanks to Skyle Lynn Carter for sending this in:

This is just to update you on some of the more trivial aspects of Celebrity Wrestling.

All that has been revealed about the competition is that all the women will take on all the women in a freestyle amateur style to score points. Three points for a pin or submission and point for moving your opponent out of the circle or opponent being disqualified. After all have faced every other female competitor once, the two with the highest scores will have a rematch, with the winner being crowned the “Queen of Celebrity Wrestling”. A similar contest is in order for the men’s competition, although I can’t confirm if they’re competing for the “King of Celebrity Wrestling.

Victories by submission are heavily discouraged, especially in the women’s division as four of the six competitor’s careers are dependent on their looks. They have all signed waivers to prevent them from suing should they get injured, but there is no protection from court action should they sue over loss of earnings caused by being injured.

So far, the show has refused to reveal what weight categories the whole competition is set in, but it is heavily speculated that both divisions each fall into three different official weight categories.

Finally, D’Lo Brown and Joe E Legend are both “celebrity trainers” for the show. As no British athletes competed in wrestling at the 2004 Olympics, there was no coverage of that sport in the UK. It is hoped that this means that the UK audience are dumb towards wrestling. For one, they hope that people believe that only wrestling in a “boxing ring” is faked, and wrestling in a “circle” is real. They also hope that people will not watch much pro-wrestling, and therefore will not understand the current connection between Brown and Legend to professional wrestling. It is also hoped that viewers will automatically believe that Brown and Legend are currently, and have been for a long time, amateur wrestlers.

One thing that the organisers have overlooked is that both Brown and Legend have wrestled in the FWA in late 2004 (when the first plans for the show were being put together).

Despite all I’ve said here, Rowdy Roddy Piper was only asked to be involved with the show as he is the most famous “British” during the ’80’s “Hulk Hogan” era. Their first choices were “British Bulldog” Davey Smith, but for obvious reasons, they never made a proper offer.

It is the obvious ITV competition to ‘Celebrity Boxing’ and ‘The Games’.
