Why WWE SummerSlam Expanded to Two Nights, According to TKO’s Mark Shapiro

WWE SummerSlam has now been a two-night event for two years in a row. TKO President Mark Shapiro has explained why WWE decided to keep the popular format for its biggest summer PLE.

SummerSlam 2026 was WWE’s first stadium event in Minneapolis. The two-night show featured several major matches, with CM Punk successfully defending the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes on Saturday. On Sunday, Roman Reigns defeated Seth Rollins and defended his World Heavyweight Championship.

Speaking during TKO’s Q2 earnings call, Shapiro discussed WWE’s decision to hold SummerSlam across two nights. He said last year’s SummerSlam played a big role in WWE keeping the two-night format.

“Our decision-making is deliberate. SummerSlam is a prime example. Following last year’s record two-day event at MetLife Stadium, we decided to take this premium live event to Minneapolis this summer for our first ever stadium show in the city, backed by a meaningful financial incentive package,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro also pointed to the success of other SummerSlam activities. WWE FanFest sold out around the same time as the event, while the company also recorded strong engagement numbers.

“The two-day show was extraordinary. The sold-out corresponding WWE FanFest delivered strong engagement metrics. Across TKO, we prioritized both the fan experience and improving profitability. They are not mutually exclusive, and they are not always in that order,” Shapiro said.

He also admitted that WWE could have charged more per ticket if SummerSlam had been held on just one night. However, the company believed two nights offered more value overall.

“We could have done SummerSlam on one night and likely had a higher ticket per cap, but in looking at that event, we chose two days because we thought it would be an overall fan experience, a better viewing experience on ESPN, more marketing for our brand on ESPN,” Shapiro explained.

WWE also held several fan activities around SummerSlam, making the weekend about more than just the matches inside the stadium.
