Cody Rhodes Officially Medically Cleared for In-Ring Return on WWE SmackDown

Cody Rhodes returned to Friday Night SmackDown on May 1, 2026, at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a major update on his condition — though what comes next wasn’t immediately set in stone.

The Undisputed WWE Champion opened the show in familiar fashion, asking fans what they wanted to talk about.

This time, however, he had something concrete to share — a development that could shift SmackDown’s landscape moving forward.

Cody Rhodes confirms medical clearance on WWE SmackDown

Rhodes revealed that earlier in the day, he met with WWE medical staff and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis to determine his status. The verdict was clear — he is officially cleared to return to in-ring action.

The update follows a difficult stretch after WrestleMania 42, where Rhodes endured significant injuries during his title defense against Randy Orton. The damage included an orbital injury that left his eye swollen shut, along with facial sutures and staples to the back of his head. WWE also placed him in concussion protocol as a precaution.

With that chapter now closed, the WWE Champion addressed the obvious next question — what’s next? Before he could fully answer, Ricky Saints interrupted, quickly turning a medical update into a potential collision course.

Saints declared that change was coming to SmackDown, positioning himself as the face of “The Revolution.” He pointedly referenced Rhodes’ recent health issues, suggesting the champion might not be at full strength. Rhodes, however, didn’t flinch — proving he’s not just cleared, but clearly confident.

The exchange escalated into a challenge, with Rhodes agreeing to face Saints. A handshake followed, though Saints made it clear he wasn’t there for respect — he was there to take over.
