Triple H’s WWE Future in Doubt Backstage Before New Contract Was Signed — Report

Triple H’s future in WWE was reportedly in doubt before he recently signed a new contract.

As reported by POST Wrestling, WWE President Nick Khan told staff members on Monday that Triple H has signed a multi-year contract extension and will remain as the Chief Content Officer of the promotion. He also endorsed The Game and defended the product from online criticism.

Fans had called for WWE to replace Triple H as head of creative, especially after Pat McAfee’s controversial role at WrestleMania 42. Now, speaking on Wrestling Observer Live on April 8, Bryan Alvarez noted that there were internal discussions within the promotion before the PLE that mirrored the fans’ opinion.

“Sometimes there will be some things that are booked and fans won’t like it, and then they’ll try to get this traction going that maybe we need to replace Triple H,” Alvarez said. “I will say that this year, leading to WrestleMania, unlike previous years when fans were discussing it, it was a topic of conversation in WWE leading up to WrestleMania 42.”

However, Alvarez clarified that the backstage discussion was not due to dissatisfaction with Triple H’s performance, but rather due to repeated last-minute interferences from individuals outside the creative team.

“I want to make it very clear, the people discussing this within WWE were not discussing this in the sense that, ‘We think he’s doing a horrible job, we need him to be replaced.’ It was being discussed specifically because so much stuff was being done at the last second by people outside. The decision to bring in Pat McAfee, the decision to insert him into the storyline, the thing with Jelly Roll. I had heard about it prior to that as well with other things that had come from above.”

The feeling backstage was reportedly that TKO officials didn’t trust Triple H

Earlier reports suggested that the decision to include Pat McAfee in the Undisputed WWE Championship storyline for WrestleMania 42 came from corporate leadership at TKO Group Holdings, possibly from CEO Ari Emmanuel.

Bryan Alvarez noted that the cumulative effect of McAfee and Jelly Roll’s inclusion in the storyline led to backstage discussions that TKO officials didn’t fully trust Triple H’s creative vision for WWE.

“It was just kind of there was a feeling that perhaps these people keep getting involved and why would they be getting involved if they had so much faith in this guy. And there were people that thought, ‘I don’t know if this guy is going to be around this time next year.'”

However, he stated that with Triple H signing a new multi-year extension has answered those concerns, at least for now.

“Turns out he ends up getting his deal extended, so he will be around,” Alvarez said. “But it was definitely a discussion point that this may not be his thing for a long period of time. It could be over soon.” [H/T SEScoops]
