Sheamus Reveals Edge’s Final WWE Match Nearly Had Different Opponent

Sheamus has shared new insight into Edge’s final WWE match, revealing that the bout fans remember almost took a very different turn before plans changed behind the scenes.

Speaking on OTB Football, Sheamus reflected on the August 18, 2023, SmackDown match in Toronto — a bout that, at the time, carried uncertainty about Edge’s future but later became his WWE farewell.

Sheamus says Edge’s final WWE match opposition was planned to be Damian Priest

According to Sheamus, the match wasn’t always set in stone. “I loved it. It actually wasn’t going to happen,” he said, noting that the idea had to be pitched before gaining traction. “We pitched it and it didn’t look like it was going to come to fruition because there were a couple of other things going on.”

He then revealed what he had heard regarding alternate plans. “I guess, his final match was supposed to be against maybe Damian Priest. That’s what I heard. I don’t know for sure. That all changed and it ended up being me and him.”

At the time, neither man knew the full weight of the moment. “We didn’t even realize it was going to be his last match. He was trying to figure out what he wanted to do,” Sheamus explained. That uncertainty added a unique layer — less scripted send-off, more real-time decision-making, like a match called on the fly but with career stakes.

The result was a first-time singles clash between two veterans who had never previously squared off one-on-one. “It was a match we never had, it was great, so easy, and so much fun,” Sheamus added, highlighting the atmosphere. “It was in Toronto, the crowd was insane. Beth Phoenix and his daughters were there. It was awesome.”

In hindsight, the bout now stands as a fitting finale — even if it almost went in a different direction.

With Edge later moving on to continue his career elsewhere (AEW) and Sheamus currently sidelined with injury, the match remains a unique closing chapter in WWE history.
