Lucha Underground Teases Return With Cryptic Video

Is Lucha Underground about to make a comeback?

After not posting from its official X account for more than six years, Lucha Underground has seemingly teased a return of sorts with a cryptic post. The short clip features a mask lying on the ground, with ominous music playing in the background. The word “más” at the end hints at “more.”

Lucha Underground was developed by Mark Burnett and Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network in partnership with Lucha Libre AAA. It launched in 2014 to critical acclaim, particularly for presenting lucha libre in a cinematic style.

Who was on Lucha Underground?

The show featured talent from AAA and independent promotions across the United States. It ran for four seasons in a unique Los Angeles “Temple” setting. Notable wrestlers included John Hennigan (aka Johnny Nitro), Ricochet (as Prince Puma), Swerve Strickland (as Killshot), Brian Cage, Jeff Cobb (as Matanza), and Rey Mysterio.

One of the highlights of the show was current WWE Intercontinental Champion Penta. He competed in several intergender matches against the likes of Chelsea Green (Reklusa) and IYO SKY (Io Shirai).

The broadcast was driven by the commentary team of Matt Striker and Vampiro, whose dynamic added to the show’s unique presentation.

On the storytelling side, Dario Cueto served as the on-screen owner and promoter of Lucha Underground. This role was portrayed by Luis Fernandez-Gil, who currently appears in MLW as the authority figure Cesar Duran.

It remains unclear who currently holds the rights to the show. However, WWE does not own the rights, as AAA also did not own the property. The Mexican promotion instead served primarily as a talent partner.

El Rey wrote the following in the replies to a Prince Puma vs Johnny Mundo match on YouTube, potentially hinting at plans for the dormant brand:

“We are working on bringing back the library of full episodes to the Lucha Underground YouTube channel real soon,” El Rey wrote. “In the mean time we will drop some fun full matches right here on El Rey.”
