WWE’s approach to placing experienced talent in NXT has raised questions in recent months, especially as several TV-ready names continue to spend extended time on the brand.
While NXT has garnered a reputation as a developmental system, recent patterns suggest there’s more to the strategy than simply preparing newcomers. Moreover, the reasoning may be more calculated than it first appears.
WWE Reportedly Uses Experienced Talent To Help Grow NXT
According to Fightful Select, WWE’s decision to send or keep television-ready talent in NXT is handled on a case-by-case basis. However, there are consistent factors influencing those decisions.
One key reason is audience growth. Both WWE and its broadcast partners reportedly see experienced names as a way to attract viewers who may not typically tune into NXT.
In other words, familiar faces can help bring new eyes to the product. This emerges as a classic case of using star power to build the brand.
Additionally, veteran presence plays a role behind the scenes. Talent with prior television experience can guide less experienced performers, offer in-ring guidance, and help maintain the overall quality of the show.
Names like Joe Hendry, Ricky Saints, Blake Monroe, and Ethan Page highlight this trend. In particular, Saints was initially expected to have a short NXT stint due to WrestleMania plans already being set at the time of his debut. However, he has remained on the brand longer than anticipated, surprising many.
The strategy also ties into NXT’s evolving identity. While still a training ground, it now operates as a full-fledged third brand, balancing development with delivering consistent weekly television.
Even for experienced wrestlers, time in NXT allows them to adapt to WWE’s production style, including camera work, pacing, and presentation. It’s less about learning to wrestle and more about learning how to perform in WWE’s system.
Although exceptions do exist. Some talents push to skip NXT altogether, while others go straight to the main roster due to established star power.
As WWE continues to build NXT’s profile, the use of experienced talent appears intentional. After all, in wrestling — much like any good storyline — sometimes you need seasoned players to help the next generation get over.
