Royce Keys has no plans to appear on WWE NXT.
WWE made one of its first big signings of 2026 by bringing in Keys, who was previously known as Powerhouse Hobbs in AEW. The wrestler made his first appearance during the 2026 WWE Royal Rumble. He entered the match and put on an impressive display, although Bronson Reed eliminated him.
Since that debut, Keys has not appeared on WWE TV. Now, a new report has revealed why he did not start his WWE journey in NXT, the developmental brand.
Royce Keys Reportedly Requested a Main Roster Spot During WWE Contract Talks
According to Fightful Select, Keys made it clear during contract talks that he wanted to join the main roster instead of starting in NXT. WWE usually sends new wrestlers to NXT first so they can adjust to the company’s style. However, Keys reportedly preferred to go straight to the main roster.
This kind of situation has happened before with other wrestlers. Popular luchadores Penta and Rey Fenix also debuted with the main roster rather than starting their runs in NXT.
Even though Keys hasn’t been on TV since the Royal Rumble, he has still been active behind the scenes. The report says he has been traveling every week with WWE to TV tapings and has competed in several dark matches before SmackDown shows. These matches usually take place before or after the broadcast and help wrestlers stay ready while creative plans are being developed.
Keys has also taken part in other WWE projects during this time. He recently appeared on the podcast What’s Your Story? hosted by Stephanie McMahon. He has already been scanned for inclusion in the WWE 2K game. Reports say WWE has filmed other projects with him as well. However, those details have not been revealed yet.
Moreover, according to BodySlam.net, there have been internal discussions about Jelly Roll possibly competing in a tag team match along with Keys at WrestleMania 42.
This idea was hinted at during the recent episode of SmackDown. Jelly Roll had a heated segment with The Miz and Kit Wilson. According to the report, Royce Keys is one of the names being considered to team up with the singer in that potential match.
