Rey Mysterio Was Battling Mask Problems in WrestleMania Classic

Rey Mysterio recently looked back at a memorable WrestleMania moment and revealed that his iconic mask almost caused disaster during one of his biggest matches.

Throughout his WWE Hall of Fame career, Mysterio has delivered unforgettable matches at WrestleMania against stars like CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, AJ Styles, and JBL. Each year, he usually debuts a special mask designed just for the big event.

However, during a recent appearance on What Do You Wanna Talk About? With Cody Rhodes, Mysterio shared that his mask at WrestleMania 21 gave him serious trouble during his match with Eddie Guerrero.

“WrestleMania 21, which was the first WrestleMania Goes Hollywood. Eddie and I opened up that show. The mask was cool, the outfit was cool. We did a version of my tattoos at the time, it was a chest piece and had Mexican across the stomach and on the back he did the design of my spine tattoo. The mask was made of like a latex material, this is the first time he had did something like that.”

According to Mysterio, the mask kept coming undone during the match. “It kept unbuttoning from the bottom and you see throughout the whole match, I’m fixing it and strapping it back on. It was a pain. I think about that happening to me now, at my age, I’d freak out. I don’t know how I handled it.”

Rey Mysterio says he felt pressure not to let Eddie Guerrero down at WrestleMania 21

Despite the issue, Mysterio pushed through determined not to let Guerrero down. “Back then, even with Eddie, you feel pressure but at the same time you know you have to put on your wrestling boots. I was trying to lace up my boots and the mask at the same time while not letting Eddie down.”

“For some reason, god is always on our side and he made it work perfectly well that night. That one was one of the masks that I love, I just struggled throughout that whole match trying to keep it on.” [H/T: Fightful]

The match between Mysterio and Guerrero opened WrestleMania 21 and remains one of the most beloved WrestleMania classics in WWE history.
