AJ Lee is set to compete at WWE Elimination Chamber, but new reports suggest the match is part of a bigger plan.
On this week’s WWE RAW, Lee confronted Becky Lynch in the ring. She made it clear that she had unfinished business with the champion. Lee also claimed she had already defeated Lynch twice in the past. She argued that it should make her the number one contender.
Lynch initially disagreed with Lee’s claim. However, after the heated exchange, she eventually accepted the challenge. Lynch agreed to defend her Intercontinental Championship at WWE Elimination Chamber in Chicago.
Interestingly, recent reports had already suggested that WWE was planning AJ Lee vs. Becky Lynch for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 42. This raised questions about the company’s decision to move forward with the match sooner. Many wondered why WWE chose to book it earlier.
Dave Meltzer on provided an update on Wrestling Observer Radio. He said the upcoming clash at Elimination Chamber is plan to build toward an even bigger encounter at WrestleMania 42. He said, “I expected this match at Mania, but I was told that there’s a reason it’s here, and the story goes until Mania. I was just basically told, I went, ‘I thought this was going to be at Mania?’ ‘Don’t worry. It all plays out to get there.” [H/T: 411mania]
Cory Hays of Bodyslam+ also supported the report X, formerly known as Twitter. “Yes. They are doing 2 matches,” Hays confirmed. Lee’s match at Elimination Chamber will mark her first singles bout in over a decade.
She will step straight into a high-stakes title contest. With both women now officially set to collide at Elimination Chamber. It will be interesting to see how their first singles encounter unfolds.
