AJ Styles’ in-ring WWE career appears to have come to an end, but questions remain about what comes next.
A new report has provided additional clarity on Styles’ contract status, retirement plans, and the broader industry interest surrounding his future.
According to Fightful Select, no further updates have emerged on an extension to Styles’ WWE deal. His previous deal is believed to expire sometime in Feb. 2026.
Fightful noted that while some outlets have continued to suggest an extension may already be in place, they have heard nothing to support that claim as of now. One TNA source believed Styles had already inked an extension with WWE before the Royal Rumble, although that has not been confirmed.
Update on AJ Styles’ WWE Career and Post-Retirement Plans
As per sources, the former WWE champion has largely handled his retirement on his own terms. One source familiar with the situation said that AJ Styles has “had it his way” when it comes to stepping away. Another member of WWE management stated the company would be open to extending his contract. However, Styles has made it clear for years that retirement was always part of his long-term plan.
Styles’ final WWE match took place at the Royal Rumble PLE in Riyadh. Gunther drew the curtains on the 48-year-old’s career by putting him to sleep via a sleeper hold. One source close to AJ Styles said that they were aware his in-ring career was ending at the Royal Rumble, but added that his next move remains unclear. That same source emphasised that Styles isn’t motivated by money and will do what he wants.
Outside WWE, Fightful reported that Styles was a major topic of backstage conversation at AEW Dynamite on January 28th. As of February 3rd, AEW had not made an offer. However, sources expect discussions to intensify if the former TNA star expresses an interest in working with the promotion. Additionally, New Japan Pro Wrestling could also take an interest in signing Styles, given recent talent departures.
For now, AJ Styles’ competitive career appears finished, but his broader wrestling future remains open-ended.
