Tommy Dreamer has shared concerns about Jacob Fatu’s shocking return on WWE SmackDown, questioning whether the angle helps in the long run.
Fatu made his surprise return during the Three Stages of Hell main event between Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre. He had been off WWE TV since October, after being mysteriously attacked backstage.
On WWE Smackdown, in a decisive fall of the match took place inside a steel cage. As Rhodes and McIntyre fought to escape, Fatu suddenly appeared and attacked both men. The chaos allowed McIntyre to escape through the cage door, winning the match and capturing the WWE Championship.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Dreamer admitted he was not a fan of how the match ended, mainly because of how it positioned Fatu. “I did not like the finish at all, because I’m like ‘What does that do for Jacob?’ He reveals himself that it’s Drew McIntyre who attacked him, and he gets a reaction, and the moment he turned on Cody, (the crowd) start booing.”
He felt the reaction exposed a problem with the booking. “I’m like, ‘So you don’t like Cody throughout the match, but now Jacob – who you like – once he starts beating up Cody, now you’re booing him and cheering for the guy he’s beating up.”
Tommy Dreamer says Jacob Fatu’s WWE return came off confusing
Tommy Dreamer said the ending made Fatu’s return feel confusing rather than impactful. “I thought the finish came off a little weird, and I just was like, where does this leave Jacob if this is his big return? If he’s going to be the guy to face Drew, he just screwed over Cody, so he’s not a likeable guy.”
He added, “If this is an era where we want to cheer bad, okay, but your worst scenario as a wrestling fan is a bad Cody Rhodes. I’m telling you, I know what he has to be a heel, and what you see as a top guy heel, you ain’t gonna like it.” [H/T: Wrestletalk]
