CM Punk Reacts to Controversial Finish of John Cena’s Final WWE Match

WWE World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk has shared his thoughts on the emotional finish of John Cena’s final WWE match.

Cena officially closed the curtain on his in-ring career last month at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he went one-on-one with Gunther. Despite a valiant effort, Cena ultimately lost after Gunther locked in a rear-naked choke. Cena fought the hold for several seconds before tapping out, notably with a smile, bringing an end to his legendary career.

The finish quickly became a major talking point online, with fans divided over Cena tapping out in his retirement match. Speaking to Robbie Fox on My Mom’s Basement, CM Punk addressed the reaction and explained why he felt the ending was perfect.

“Some people maybe I don’t think you understand what you’re watching, but if you didn’t like it, I can also understand that, but to overnight make it your entire personality and spend an unhealthy amount of time talking about it.”

He pointed out that no matter how the match ended, some fans would have complained. “Put it this way, if John won, they’d be mad about that too, but we wouldn’t be talking about it anymore, and we’re still talking about that finish. The smile, the tap, ‘oh my God the guy that said don’t give up just gave up’, did he?”

Punk dismissed the over analysis surrounding the moment and praised the storytelling behind it. “Everybody’s an expert, I thought it was beautiful.” [H/T: Wrestletalk]
